Have you been told you need surgery, and you feel anxious about it?

If you have been advised to have a hysterectomy, fibroid removal, ovarian cyst removal or another gynecological procedure, and you feel you want to hear it from one more doctor before deciding, that is not distrust. It is responsibility. International clinical guidelines encourage a second opinion precisely in situations where the decision is major and there is more than one option.

At my practice in Ampelokipoi, Athens, I offer a structured second opinion for gynecological procedures, in person or by video call if you live far away.

When a second opinion is worth seeking

  • You were advised to have a hysterectomy and want to know whether a less invasive option exists (e.g. hysteroscopic or laparoscopic treatment, medication, or monitoring).
  • You have fibroids and have heard different recommendations from different doctors.
  • An ovarian cyst was found and you are not sure whether it should be removed now or monitored.
  • You were advised to have surgery for endometriosis or polyps and want to better understand why.
  • You simply feel the decision was made in a hurry and you want to understand it before you proceed.

My approach: "When I do NOT recommend surgery"

Readers of my articles know that every procedure I describe includes a section called "When I do NOT recommend it". I believe surgery is right only when there is a clear indication and when gentler options have truly been exhausted or do not fit your case. Sometimes the second opinion confirms the first one, and that is valuable too: you leave the office feeling certain, not confused.

Note: A second opinion is not "against" your doctor. It is an extra pair of experienced eyes on your data. Most colleagues encourage it.

What the second-opinion visit includes

  1. A review of your history and all the tests you bring (ultrasounds, MRI, hormonal tests, medical reports).
  2. A new gynecological ultrasound at the practice where needed (for video calls: assessment of the imaging you already have).
  3. A clear answer to three questions: Is surgery truly needed? If yes, which technique is most suitable for you? If not, what is the monitoring plan?
  4. Time for all your questions, without rush.

In person or by video call

If you live outside Athens or abroad, the second opinion can be done by video call, after you first send me your tests.

What to bring with you

  • Your recent imaging (ultrasound, MRI — preferably with the CDs/files, not only the written reports)
  • Recent blood/hormonal tests, if available
  • The report or note with the recommendation for surgery
  • A list of medications you take
  • Your questions written down, so none of them is left unanswered

Frequently asked questions

Will my doctor be "offended" if I seek a second opinion?

No, and you do not even need to discuss it with them if you prefer not to. A second opinion is an internationally established practice and your right. A serious doctor is not bothered by it.

How much does a second opinion cost?

The cost depends on whether a new ultrasound is needed and on the complexity of your file. Call us at 697 461 4818 so we can inform you and schedule enough time for your case.

What happens if you agree with the first opinion?

Then I will tell you clearly and explain why. The goal is not to hear something different — it is to decide with certainty. If the proposed procedure is the right one, you will leave reassured that you are taking the right step.

Can you perform the procedure yourself if it is needed?

Yes. I specialize in laparoscopic and hysteroscopic surgery and operate at IASO Hospital. But that is entirely your choice, and of course the second opinion does not commit you to anything.

Make the decision with a clear mind.
